American Gage has run an A2LA-accredited calibration laboratory in Placentia, California since 1968 — serving aerospace, medical device, biotech, defense, electronics, and pharmaceutical manufacturers across Southern California for 58 years. Call (657) 216-2600.
American Gage is the dba of RSA Industries Inc, a privately-held metrology and calibration company headquartered at 1131 S Richfield Road in Placentia, California. Roger Arnold is the owner and quality manager; Raymond Williamson runs operations and customer engagement; a team of credentialed metrology technicians staff the lab Monday through Friday, 7:30 AM to 4:00 PM Pacific.
58 years of metrology in Southern California
American Gage was founded in 1968 — when calibration was still a craft passed down from one technician to the next, before ISO accreditation existed in its current form, and when most Southern California aerospace manufacturers needed a local calibration source. The lab grew with the LA / OC aerospace corridor: Boeing, Hughes, Lockheed, McDonnell Douglas, Northrop, and the dozens of Tier 1, 2, and 3 suppliers that fed them.
Over the decades the customer mix has shifted alongside Southern California's industrial base — medical device manufacturing scaled up in Orange and San Diego counties, biotech took root in San Diego and the Westside, defense electronics remained a Southern California specialty. American Gage built its A2LA scope to match: dimensional and mass for the legacy aerospace work, electrical and pressure for defense electronics, pipette and humidity for biotech and medical device, temperature for pharmaceutical stability programs.
A2LA ISO/IEC 17025:2017 accredited since the standard existed
American Gage has held A2LA accreditation to ISO/IEC 17025:2017 (and the predecessor revisions before it) since the standard became the international benchmark for calibration laboratories. The current accreditation covers all seven of our discipline groups — dimensional, electrical, mass, mechanical, pressure and flow, temperature and humidity, pipette — under A2LA certificate number 0086.01.
The full scope of accreditation page documents the specific measurements within each discipline. The scope PDF is downloadable for supplier-qualification packets.
Who buys calibration from American Gage
Regulated manufacturers in Southern California where calibration evidence has to hold up to audit. The most common buyers:
- Aerospace primes and Tier 1/2/3 suppliers — AS9100 supplier qualification, Nadcap-supportive AMS 2750 surveys, ITAR-aware handling.
- Medical device, IVD, and combination product manufacturers — ISO 13485, FDA 21 CFR Part 820 quality records, ISO 8655 pipette.
- Biotech and bioprocess facilities — high pipette throughput, humidity uncertainty as low as 0.32% RH, GLP support.
- Defense contractors — Z540.3 compliant, ITAR-aware, FAR/DFARS-supportive.
- Electronics and semiconductor — DMMs, oscilloscopes, calibrators, gas flow MFCs.
- Pharmaceutical and biologics — FDA 21 CFR Part 211 cGMP, ICH Q1A-Q1F stability, USP-aligned reporting.
The quality system behind every certificate
American Gage operates a documented quality management system under ISO/IEC 17025:2017. Every calibration certificate documents:
- The customer's instrument identification
- As-found and as-left readings against the customer's specification or the manufacturer's tolerance
- Measurement uncertainty calculated to the appropriate methodology (GUM, ISO 8655-7 for pipette work, ISO 17025 5.10.4 for other disciplines)
- The reference standards used and their NIST traceability chain
- The environmental conditions during calibration
- The technician identity
- The calibration date and the recommended due date
- The decision rule applied per ANSI/NCSL Z540.3-2006, with TUR documented
This isn't calibration with a checkmark on a piece of paper. This is calibration evidence that an FDA inspector, a notified-body auditor, or an AS9100 customer-quality reviewer can take to a quality system audit and use to close findings.
