Micrometer Calibration Explained
A micrometer is a more precise instrument than a caliper, and its calibration reflects that — flatness and parallelism of the measuring faces matter as much as raw accuracy.

What gets checked
Calibration verifies accuracy across the micrometer’s range using gauge blocks, plus the flatness of the anvil and spindle faces and their parallelism (often with optical flats). Because micrometers resolve to the micron level, temperature control and careful technique are part of the measurement, not an afterthought.
What the certificate should show
Expect as-found/as-left data at multiple points, uncertainty, and the flatness/parallelism results where applicable. A certificate that reports only a single point tells you little about how the instrument behaves across its span.

For precision work, flatness and parallelism of the faces are key contributors and are typically verified at calibration. Ask your lab to confirm these are included for critical micrometers.
